Experience the joy of working with clay in this 8-week course designed for beginners and those who want to refresh their knowledge. Set in our contemporary, fully-equipped pottery studio, each 2.5-hour session will introduce you to different ceramic techniques. You’ll learn to shape, design, and craft your own pieces while building confidence with the material. With plenty of hands-on practice and guidance, this course offers a relaxed and creative space to explore the art of pottery and develop your skills week by week. This course covers everything from different clay types to glazing tips and tricks, giving you a full understanding of the pottery process from start to finish.
Week 1: Introduction to Clay
- What is pottery and ceramics?
- Getting to know different types of clay.
- Basic hand-building: pinch pots.
Week 2: Coiling Techniques
- Learning how to build forms using the coiling method.
- Creating functional or decorative pieces.
Week 3: Slab Building
- Rolling and shaping slabs to construct forms.
- Making simple forms such as trays, vases or boxes.
Week 4: Surface Decoration Techniques
- Exploring underglazes, slip trailing, and sgraffito.
- Experimenting with carving and texture.
Week 5: Introduction to the Pottery Wheel
- Centering clay on the wheel.
- Throwing basic shapes such as cylinders and bowls.
Week 6: Refining Wheel-Thrown Pieces
- Trimming and finishing your wheel-thrown creations.
- Adding handles or decorative elements.
Week 7: Glazing Basics
- Understanding different glazing techniques.
- Applying glazes to your bisque-fired pieces.
Week 8: Unveiling Your Work & Final Touches
- Collecting your glazed and fired creations.
- Group discussion and reflection on the creative process.
